hey guys! it's been a while... here's what I've been up to with my art, the opportunities that drawing everyday has given me, my career, and life, and some thoughts on the recent Instagram, Cara, and Adobe events. the art community feels like its crumbling, but as long as we find community with each other, we can weather any storm. perfectionism is ruining your art
Переглядів 91 тис.Місяць тому
are you a perfectionist? we commonly think of perfectionist artists as intense, detail obsessed artists who try to perfectly render everything in their paintings. while that is true sometimes, I would argue that the most common creative perfectionist is the creative that procrastinates and avoids working on the artwork they care about most due to the fear of not meeting the goliath expectations...

BAKE AND DRAW EP.2 ✿ art block, being an art content creator, and pumpkin muffins!
Only talent will get you to your goal. I know people that have drawn for over ten years and still cant draw. 😢
You have put what I've struggled with for years into words: "perfectionism paralysis" and especially that perfectionism isn't just about meticulous actions and details. I have felt like an impostor perfectionist because of the limited definition. So thank you for this video!
Well said!
OMG WAIT i have a cowboy OC that looks kinda like yours!!!! I've never seen ur art but I wasn't expecting that LMAO it's always so fun finding people with similar tastes and designs as mine, your work is so lovely, this video's super informative and I can't wait to see more of your characters!! ❤️❤️❤️
For the algorithm: #Dildo 👍👍 (Imperfect, but it might work.)
6:43 what software were you using?
This is the soft delivered and honest talk I needed to hear. Thank You, I will continue this art journey.
😭😭 Thank you, I cant seem to enjoy making if my art isnt perfect of professional but i am no professional!!
6:18 called me outtt I'll do as you say 🫡
I just sorta accepted that the image in my head can’t be done unless I practiced or like.. Had many years of experience Like talons! I literally do em in an anthro way that mimics hand in a way that I only dreamed of before, _but I’ve been doing this for an actual decade_
I really needed to hear this. 😟 After 16 years nailing down pencil hyper-realism, I realized I'm a printer, not an artist. After assuming I'd be great at producing original content and *QUICKLY* being humbled, I've been so discouraged and feel like I'm brand new to art. I've since found it hard to do anything because I'm comparing everything to the pencil stuff I've spent half my life doing, which doesn't even make sense. I actually found your video while procrastinating because of... the blank-page fear... 😟 I'm gonna try though, this video has me motivated!
I wanna make manga. Now tell me i cant be a perfektionist...
I couldn't have said it better myself! I can attest that the fear of failure is a big hindrance when it comes to getting better at digital art. As someone relatively new to painting, I'm trying to embrace failure and even enjoy it. Failing is inevitable, so why get discouraged when it happens? I suppose that part of the issue is how many artists would prefer to look at a blank canvas than an ugly painting---which is why I'm glad you emphasized enjoying the process. In an age of AI art, I predict that this will become a critical skill---even more than it already is. Regardless of whether AI can make thousands of digital paintings in the time it takes us to open up our canvas, it would be foolish to let it rob us artists of the satisfaction and fulfillment we get from the act of creating. One of the biggest challenges of being a digital artist is knowing that there are people who are a lot better than you. Ultimately, there are two choices when you see their work: berate yourself for not being as good as them and tell yourself that you never will (which is unhealthy and will ensure that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy ) or try to be inspired by their work (my personal favorite, even though it is more challenging). Anyway, I really resonated with the points you made in this video and I'm happy to see more attention brought to the often-overlooked hurdles of creating art.
Just found out that The Velvet Underground had written a song called Lonesome Cowboy Bill? It's probably a coincidence but that's cool...
Please share the template, this would help me so much as person with adhd/autism-/gen/pos :D
I’m planning on sharing it next month!! just finished the template, going to film a whole video walkthrough on how to use it :3
I would draw almost everyday when I was in high school. I wish I could go back to that but I have matured which made me lose some creativity
try to tap back into your interests in high school and build up that creative mentality again! you got this, small steps will make things a lot less overwhelming and more fun in your journey!
Shay, thank you so much for your videos. I struggle with migraines quite a lot, I miss out on things and my fomo gets bigger everytime i have to stay in the house. But your videos are so calm and feel like we're just chilling together without me having to give any input, that i can watch/listen to them even on days like these. I love your style of video and your artstyle. Again, thank you for your content <3
so happy that I can bring some comfort and company to your day!! thank you so much for watching!!
Glad to see you back!! Are you still doing your sticker club? How do I join?
happy to be back! I am prepping to reopen the club after I move and get settled in, hopefully in the beginning of september! thank you so much for the interest, just gotta figure everything out <333

HOMESTUCK 👁 👁
Thank u so much for this video I was in the middle of being frustrated and seeing this video really helped me think more. Thank u so much I’ll do my best to let loose on my art and have fun with it
yay!! you got this, so happy this video found you <333
I’m sorry, I was just watching the videos peacefully but I need to say something. It’s perfectly ok and even good to be aware of shortcomings and places you could improve BUT YOUR DRAWINGS ARE SO GOOD. “I dont know how to draw cats” (shows a perfectly sketched cat) “I hate this one” (shows a stunning and colourful doodle of the boyfriend with rainbow light in his hair) “This idea isnt really going anywhere so I am disappointed” (THAT SKETCH IS BETTER THAN SOME OF MY FINISHED PIECES. Wait, scrap that. MOST of my finished pieces.) The way you can create something whole and beautiful from imagination and actually make it work is a skill all artists aspire to learn and not everyone can get there. Your drawings are great. Edit: I wrote that comment mid video but something new just came up. “SUPER RUSTY”?!?!? I dont think I need to say that even your “rusty” is amazing
I need to get one of these.
i definitely recommend any of them!
For me, being a "perfectionist", is drawing the same piece over and over, because it's never just right......damn.
totally feel this,,, i have a whole video if you need some comfort and advice with this!! <3 ua-cam.com/video/llDHZF5hr1o/v-deo.html
@@sketchesofshay Thnks.
Hiii❤I love and appreciate your content🎉. What kind of pen do you use? Please❤
On the flip side, I know how much I suck, but knowing that doesn't stop me from having fun just going for all our nothing pieces lmao
that's what art is all about! you're on the right track!
What program do you use to redraw your hand drawn drawing, to trace basically?
i was using procreate on my ipad, and clip studio on my desktop!
havent tried afinity/ifinity, but i can vouch for davinci resolve, I've been using for about a year so far and whilst it looks a bit more scary than some other editing software, its genuinely so comfortable and straight forward to use (this is coming from someone who is very picky with software lol it needs to be comfy or else I wont use it) but id love to hear what you think of other video editing software and that side of your creation processes
Where's the camera!? STOP Spying on me!

smart
i would definitely be interested in the journal template!❤
awesome!! I just finished putting it together this week, it should be coming out in july sometime!
Love watching/listening to you while I'm sketching. You always inspire & motivate me :)
so happy I get to join in on your art sessions! <33
I've been struggling a lot with perfectionism and self-hatred due to increased stress in my life for months now, and I just wanted to thank you for this video. It found me in a time when I was close to a breaking point, and I can't thank you enough for the kindness and knowledge you've shared. You saying no one can create the art that us as as individual artists can create hit home, and I think that statement will stay with me throughout my art lifespan to remind me to never give up, even when my brain tells me to. Thank you so much for sharing this video <3
After receiving a bunch of unsolicited art critique from someone that I’ve admired for a while, this video comforts me. Their critique is the main reason why I struggle to make stuff I love, because I worry that the proportions might be wrong or the whole drawing’s wrong in general. There’s always a voice in the back of my head reminding me to make sure that everything’s correct or else it won’t be right. This video is 🔛🔝❣️
Hey can any of you Kind Artists recommend me a Digital Paying Website that won’t make me Receive Fees or Bills so I can pay People for my Future Animation Projects.
this piece 12:15 genuinely made me beam love how you emphasize the importance of just allowing yourself to be bored. boredom=/misery, it's vital. being constantly stimulated or entertained is only a modern phenomenon that I think people should try and avoid, especially because it hinders the emergence of new, 'original' thoughts since you're constantly consuming information from everyone/everything else you were, in fact incredibly un-subtle about the huge project, and god I AM SUPER EXCITED (if I'm guessing correctly, how embarrassing would it be if I was completely off the mark) hearing about the metaAI situation is enraging. i can only really hope for strong protections for artists and all other creators in the future, regarding machine learning and whatnot. it's a bit baffling that these companies are just allowed to scrape whatever they want to train their thieving ML programs. 23:57 this piece is doing something to my brain. it's so lively, it practically feels as if it's animated, I can't stress this enough cheers to a great summer, all these updates have me so excited. also wanted to point out how clean the editing has gotten this past year. the one in particular, is so smooth. --we're laptop twins! I upgraded from a 2016 MacBook to the M3 in November of last year and it's awesome!
Can we get Pokémon or can you make a Pokémon oc 🥹
joder que bonito
my issue is that i have a ton of things i want to draw, and i can sit and watch these videos all day but can't for the life of me pick up a pen or pencil. i feel like i've just lost so much love for doing art because i'm extremely critical of it. i don't know what to do now, or if it's just a lost cause
The part where you talked about there being no specific timeline for learning and becoming an artist really stuck out to me. I’m going to be a senior in high school next year and I went into high school thinking that I was going to take art all 4 years. My freshman year was the first year back at school in-person after the pandemic and I struggled in all my classes that year, art especially. I ended the year with a D in art because I was always behind on work and couldn’t catch up, I felt terrible and I was too ashamed to try and continue with art the next year. My mental health has improved so much since then, but now that I haven’t taken any art classes since my freshman year (I still draw as a hobby), I have been feeling a bit depressed, feeling like I should’ve continued with art back then. I saw so many beautiful pieces that art students at my school have made in the past year and I felt like I couldn’t catch up. I’ve been more motivated recently to continue drawing and watching your videos ,and this one specifically, has helped me feel so much better. I think I’m going to try emailing my school’s art teacher and ask if I can continue with art next year, thank you for motivating me to keep learning :).
sadly with one line prompt AI can do tones of these now, and it will only get better and better, but I truly hope the original artiest will keep inspire the art industry, not sure if they will last though.
even if ai steals jobs from me and other artists, I still won't stop creating. it's just too fun and fulfilling, and I'll just get a different job to pay the bills. monetizing my art is just a bonus.
Hey Shay, this is the first video I've ever seen by you and I think it's amazing, and I really needed to hear this so from the bottom of my heart, thank you. :)
omg hi! welcome to the channel! so glad that this resonated with you. we are in this together <3
hey! could you tell me what version update you use ;_; when i try to print my file silhouette turns the image quality low and the colors are washed out...
I HAVE THE CT MEOWING GLUED TO MY BRAIN
Thankfully I was never the type to never start because I was afraid it wouldn’t be perfect. Not to say I’m fully confident in my abilities, but at the same time I also had an eraser. 😊
I would love to watch your notion set up!! It could be very helpful, maybe you can get notion as an sponsor...
I’m working on a video showing more of my notions right now! Should be coming out sometime next month along with a free template :3
I've always been a real perfectionist, but recently I started an animated series with the mentality that as long as people can tell what they're looking at its good enough. It was a real struggle to let the perfectionism go at first, but since I started working this way my skills have improved rapidly and my project is the most successful thing I've ever done.
I think "good enough" is the perfect antidote to perfectionism. Have standards---but don't let them keep you from creating.
i love your oc videos but my problem is the body and drawing from my head do have any tips for that or getting your style down?
i have a whole video about how I draw and learn anatomy here! :ua-cam.com/video/3nXjGbICyNU/v-deo.html
